.SWF is easy, it stands for Shockwave Flash.  Back before Director could do
shockwave for the web, Flash was the only web option, and it was called
Shockwave.  To finish the file and HTML for the web, you had to use a
program called Aftershock, to "Shock" the content.  I guess they just stuck
with the extension even though it's not called Shockwave Flash anymore

The etymology of acronyms is not necessarily a static phenomenon, it
may well vary over time.
History is written by the victor, and is subject to change.
