Hm, I saw the old SoundDesigner format mentioned earlier. One thing that was considered cool about SD was that it implemented something called regions, which could be used for defining several loops in the same sample. I'm not sure what AIFF thinks about regions though.

It is also interesting (and good) that in Director, the #loopStartTime takes precedence over the sound's internal loop (if that is what it is). When #loopStartTime isn't used, the sound reverts to looping with the internal loop.
