Further clarifying what I need the program to do:
1. take in Spanish or English text
2. via an xtra or another director controlled program spell check the text
3. via an xtra or another director controlled program translate the text
4. take that now totally mangled text rotting cow meat and vodka and format it for printing and or email
5. help language minority students communicate with their teachers
6. begin doctoral dissertation
My goal is to format the questions (when possible) in such a way as to encourage accurate translation without overly limiting range of input.

Hi,
I need help understanding the feasibility of coding a project in Director 8.5 that took in text in English and Spanish and first spell checked the entry fields and then translated those entries into the other language.
Some fields would be one sentence answers and others would be up to a page long.

Actually, both Kerry and Daniel responded pretty much in line w/ my solution, which would be to hijack (borrow, use, license, whatever) net services that do such things invoking the magic of getNetText. Unless you're going for your doctorate in over-extending languages and re-inventing the wheel ;-) Even then, however, Kerry's examples fail pretty miserably in Babel Fish (English->Spanish->English => The alcohol is arranged, but the meat is weak. & He lead a block and gave return in a small restaurant.)
