I believe it's DVD specific. We solved the problem here by using a Phillips
Pro DVD player, which had a series of commands programmed into it that you
could read/write from director, using a serial port and the
DirectCommunication Xtra from DirectXtras.
Director would send strings through the serial port (or ports - you're only
limited by the number of ports installed in your machine), and the software
on the other end (the DVD) would interpret them and react accordingly. The
DVD would also send strings back to Director. It wasn't totally foolproof
(e.g., the strings needed to be parsed and thoroughly error-checked) but it
worked (still working afik - in St Mary's Guildhall, Coventry).
The commands issued, however were specific to the DVD, which is not a
problem for a kiosk, but won't be suitable for CD-ROM distribution, so it
really depends on what you're after.
