In my opinion Authorware is very different to Director in many ways yet is a
very good and powerful tool. Authorware is geared towards the developing of
computer based training (having convenient tools for allowing user
interaction i.e. easy to use hot spots, target areas, text entry) whereas
Director is more about developing presentations although both tasks can be
developed with both tools. A flowline which icons are added to instead of
the timeline and cast members in Director and whatever is put on an
Authorware stage stays there until erased (i find this easier to use than
having to extending the sprites all the time).
In my experience, developing a project with Authorware then going on to
developing with Director or vice versa, can be very confusing at first. I
have often found myself saying "I could do this so easily if i was using
Authorware (or Director)" when using the other tool. People tend towards
either one or the other depending on preferences and purpose of use.
Director files can be embedded into Authorware and although i haven't
checked, i'm sure Authorware can be embedded into Director.
Director 8's new visually spectacular behaviours are great for inhancing
presentations whereas the lastest Authorware update (which uses "knowledge
objects" as opposed to behaviours that introduce coded templates to a
project)introduces features to enhance development of CBT.

I personally prefer using Authorware as i have more experience in coding in
its calculate icons than coding with Lingo (although recently i have been
very impressed with Lingo). However i am working mainly with CBT.

I hope this helps

Jim
