Thanks to Buzz for giving me the hint:

Sound Channels 1 & 2 are different than Sound Channels 3-8.  Using sound(1).play() & sound(2).play() gives continuous sound in the back, but using 3-5 kill the sound on setting the new MIAW.visible to FALSE.

One option around this is to open the MIAW and hide it behind the stage til needed, any other options?
