Do you base that belief on anything concrete?

I've heard a few assumptions like that, which I agree has the effect you 
mention, but I haven't noticed any evidence to support it.

(With a modest pool of pairs, that would be easy to test, particularly if it's 
a single-character check-character, and especially if it's a digit).
