VMWARE is a Intel-only product. The 390 equivalent is z/VM, which provides
virtual machines that can contain Linux systems (or any other 390 operating
system).

VIF is no longer available. The replacement is z/VM. Theoretical maximum is
tens of thousands, practical maximum is somewhat less. It depends on the
workload, and the resources assigned to the partition.

VIF is no longer available. The license cost for z/VM (in the US; don't
know what it is in South Africa) is US $45000/engine one time charge and US
$11000/yr maintenance.

You can run emulated Intel systems under Linux in a virtual machine provided
by z/VM. Currently the performance is not terrific (sub-Pentium 200 class),
but it works. I wouldn't recommend doing it for much more than testing or
problem determinations stuff. Much of the services provided by NT servers
can be transparently replaced with Linux equivalents, which is a much better
route to go.
