We had the same symptom here after building a new kernel.  We finally checked
the .config options (make xconfig) and discovered it was using some experimental
modules/drivers.  Once we took them out it worked fine.  There have also been
a couple of other posts to this list about the symptom you are having - you
may want to check out this list's archives.  Good luck.
