Phil: You are reading something in to this that is not there. We have
almost no requirement to make VSE/ESA itself 64-bit capable. There are
no customers (that I am aware of) that need the memory extension 64-bit
would supply. The big memory items (like WebSphere) can run on Linux
under z/VM alongside VSE/ESA. We believe that the best way to extend
VSE/ESA is by using Linux on zSeries. One of the great things in the
z/Architecture design is that 64-bit and 31-bit systems can happily
coexist with each other on the same processor with no loss of
performance. Why spend huge amounts of money making VSE 64-bit if there
is no functional need to do so?
