I've been very successful with installing a minimal SLES8 system on 1112
cylinders. This way three can fit on a 3390-3 volume with a very small
amount of left over space. I also have to make sure that I select
additional packages (inetd, vsftpd, THE and some others) either at
install time, or after initial installation.

I've not recently experimented with breaking out other filesystems.
