Yeah you're right, it is zSeries under VM. 

So you're saying...

Create another VM Lpar and install SLES9 from there?

If you're running VM on your S/390 or zSeries, that's as easy as it gets.
Since there's no SuSE for OS/390, I'm guessing that's what you meant.

Wrt to upgrade, that's a religious question. *I* would create a new virtual
machine and install a new SLES 9 system rather than try to sort out upgrade
questions. It doesn't break your current system, and there's lots of new
stuff to take advantage of that isn't in SLES8. Also, I don't think there is
a "upgrade" method if you are switching from 31-bit to 64-bit, so you may
not have a choice.
