When DB/2 starts it (via smoke and mirrors) communicates with TCP/IP and issues a gethostid() request. In the tcpip(profile) configuration I did not have a primaryinterface parameter set and therefore the system defaulted to the first interface found in the Home stanza which was my hipersocket definition.
My fix was to assign "primaryinterface lcs0" sans quotes which points to my OSA and the external world and to change the order of the hosts to have the primary adapter first.
