Does this mean that you just didn't connect the console to it before you IPLed? That's what you have to do for VM/370, IIRC (I use Herc for Linux/390 work, and haven't used VM/370 in a couple years, so this is from memory and could be wrong): Start Hercules. Connect a tn3270 session to Hercules. *THEN* IPL VM/370. It will recognize your attached tn3270 session as the console. Also, I notice you're running 2.17. 3.02 is current, and it might be 3.03 (I don't remember if 3.03 is released yet or still in testing). Although this changes some tape handling semantics, its performance-- well, at least for Linux--is a lot better.
