With Linux 2.6 kernel the chandev brain damage has gone. You find the corresponding things in the /sys file system. The SuSE boot scripts use control files in /etc/sysconfig/hardware and /etc/sysconfig/network to define the devices. YaST will define these files for you if you want. Have a look at the current Device Drivers book to see how you define them manually.
