Isn't really practical if the source system is actually active and doing
useful stuff. Having /usr go missing mid-stream tends to ruin an
application's whole day, even if the system would let you unmount an
active filesystem...8-)

On the other hand, if you're disciplined enough to deploy changes as
RPMs, then you probably have a pretty good idea of how to control it. We
do it a lot with Debian packages, and it makes it really easy to build
custom systems.
