I have been having problems accessing data from /var/.... directories
through mysql as well as the web. I tracked it down to some hidden
security in SuSE9 that prevents hosting of web or mysql data in any
directory below. I moved the hosting to a different directory and now
everything works.

It was kind of strange. When mysql data under /var/lib/mysql as is the
default, a user could not connect to a database, when logged in. However
if I as root, then the user can connect with the user's credentials.

Did anyone else observed this behaviour? Is it published somewhere?

Needless to say, sometime ago when working with Redhat and Slackware, I
never encountered a problem like this.
