When I first started with zLinux, I didn't know all the different
Windows based FTP servers available, and what the differences were.
Initially, under Win/98, mounting my CD drive seemed to work. The FTP
server I tried to use didn't work well.
When I tried the next release of Linux, I was on XP. Window shares
didn't seem to work. Eventually I found an FTP server that did work.
Apparently, some FTP servers for Windows, didn't support long
filenames
and long directory names.

I'll mention one thing that I think might be useful for anybody who ends
up in this situation. Get the free version of VMware from
http://www.vmware.com. You can then run a real Linux system under
Windows, using "bridged ethernet". Of course, I am assuming that you
have "local administrator" authority to install VMware on your desktop.
Be sure your desktop has enough CPU power for this. I tried it on my
1.8Ghz Celeron here at work and got to take a lot of naps.

What I want is an actual Linux/Intel server that is MINE! But that is
not going to happen.

Customise Damned Small linux (Knoppix derived, can run from RAM).

Boot DSL, choose "run in RAM"
Eject CD
Insert SLE{S<D} disk.
Start a patchy server. And/or ftp.

The free vmware Unless it's changed) doesn't allow to create Linux
images. However, i think MS's freeware does.

I've long rhought it would be a Fine Thing for zSeries linux CDs (and
especially DVDs) to boot on intel and run ftp and/or http. and/or nfs to
export the files.

I could do it.
