This takes me back.
I think the way I saw this work was with Tektronix emulation in 'xterm'.
Ctrl-Middle (mouse button) and look for "Show Tek Window" and "Switch to
Tek Mode".  This was driven via 'tn3270' which had the 7171 transparency
hack supported in its emulation.  Does 'c3270' also do 7171 trans?

That is ... if you just gotta have GDDM.   :-)

So ... to try to be answering Jose's question,  you bet!
There are good 3270 emulators for Linux,  most based on X3270.
