Though I agree with you totally, many places are willing to shell out
$0.00 and carve out an LPAR for a "proof of concept" type test. Many
don't want the time, cost (minimal), and effort required to first
install z/VM (especially if there are no z/VM literate people
available), then install Linux. No offense to the OP, but this is likely
to be especially true of a shop which is trying out CentOS instead of
SUSE or RHEL. I know that it was the way here, before it was all bounced
out the door because of insanity on the part of the then-management
(since replaced) who thought that you could run Windows under Linux on a
System z. They wanted to consolidate Windows SQL servers onto the System
z. No, they did not want to run Oracle or DB2 or ..., only MS SQL
Server. Again, these people are now gone - from the CIO down 2 levels of
management.
