Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, there's no way to know with any
certainty just how to identify what distribution you're on. Just where
would
uname get the information, when we can't agree on where to find it by
hand?

So in summary, there seems to be no simple way, either manual or
automated,
of knowing what distribution you're on, without prior knowledge of what
distribution you're on.

* cough * silly standards conventions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version: \
    :core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.1-ia32:graphics-3.1-noarch
Distributor ID: CentOS
Description: CentOS release 5.2 (Final)
Release: 5.2
Codename: Final
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$

of course one has to have the LSB tool installed.

It's available for Debian, but not normally installed (and I really
don't know just what it means wrt Debian and others who don't use rpm as
their principal package management tool. Or for Unix since Alan tossed
that in).

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version:
core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-noarch:core-2.0-ia32:core-3.0-ia32:core-3.1-ia32:cxx-2.0-noarch:cxx-3.0-noarch:cxx-3.1-noarch:cxx-2.0-ia32:cxx-3.0-ia32:cxx-3.1-ia32:graphics-2.0-noarch:graphics-3.0-noarch:graphics-3.1-noarch:graphics-2.0-ia32:graphics-3.0-ia32:graphics-3.1-ia32:desktop-3.1-noarch:desktop-3.1-ia32
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (etch)
Release: 4.0
Codename: etch
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Or for those who don't have codenames such as Boron, Etch, Hurricane,
Colgate, Sarge. "Final" as above doesn't have the same aura about it!
