Thanks to all who replied. I have something working: whichever CVS snapshot Mark Post yanked from a few months ago appears to work nicely. It's a 3.05+ roughly.
I have a VDISK (thus FBA) on a VM-hosted Linux where I have rebuilt most of the system for the "appliance". Installed the kernel onto that VDISK and then used 'dd' to grab a byte-for-byte copy. Took that file to my Herculean host and configgered it as a 9336.
