IBM still offers Scorpion and RACE studies.
- The Scorpion study is a very extensive lab service offering
- Both of them are now platform agnostic (no z in front of RACE).

The RACE study now requires executive sponsorship and a commitment to move
forward with a proof of concept (POC) if the numbers work out favorable
for a System z solution.
- The study is only as good as the information that is made available for
it.
- Processor types, utilization and or transaction rates, and then all the
cost associated with your data center as a whole is a quick high level
view of what is required.

- When a data center is divided, or run by silos it can be very difficult
to get everyone working together.
- That is really required in order to collect really useful information
for this type of study.

A major message behind building a Smarter IT Infrastructures starts by
managing your data center like a single, well oiled machine.
- A lot of moving parts exist, and you want them all working together in
order to insure smooth over all efficiency with consistent output exist.
- Getting a great return on your investment also helps in todays economy.

By the way, I am not sure if IBM offers these studies outside of the
United States.
Thanks and Best Regards,

Kurt Acker

zRACE is still available. We did a rather incomplete study with still
interesting results in 2007. Of course, politics can make the effort
worthless. A senior manager simply refused to make any infrastructure
changes. So, executive sponsorship is important if you go down this
route. Contact your IBM account rep.

What problems did you perceive or had you heard about?
