RHEL 6 was released publicly today, and is available for download from RHN (https://rhn.redhat.com). For more info, please see:
http://www.redhat.com/promo/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux6/ Here are a couple of selected bullets from the "what's new" link on the page above.. ---------- Scalability * Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 supports more sockets, more cores, more threads, and more memory. Efficient Scheduling * The CFS schedules the next task to be run based on which task has consumed the least time, task prioritization, and other factors. Using hardware awareness and multi-core topologies, the CFS optimizes task performance and power consumption. Filesystems * The new default file system, ext4, is faster, more robust, and scales to 16TB. * NFSv4 is significantly improved over NFSv3, and is backwards compatible. * Fuse allows filesystems to run in user space allowing testing and development on newer fused-based filesystems (such as cloud filesystems). System Resource Allocation * Cgroups organize system tasks so that they can be tracked, and so that other system services can control the resources that cgroup tasks may consume (Partitioning). Two user-space tools, cgexec and cgclassify, provide easy configuration and management of cgroups. ..plus much more. See http://www.redhat.com/rhel/server/details/ for more info on what's new.
