Check the contents of each package. If the package supplies libraries, then DO NOT remove them because other things may depend on them. If the package supplies commands, you may have difficulty removing. (But re-install of preferred arch may suffice.)
In the case of libraries, it is normal to have both architectures installed. Desirable even.
