I'm going to see if my manager will allow me to do test install on our z9BC. We 
don't run z/Linux here right now, but I do have a "sandbox" LPAR definition. So 
I'll see if I can sweet talk him into allowing me to try to IPL the DVD into 
that LPAR. That will totally convince me that the problem is with 
Hercules-390's emulation somehow. In the deep past, I have done some debugging 
of Hercules and found one "bug". Or I may just give up again. I'm looking at 
z/Linux because there have been some vague rumblings that we might consider 
consolidating some Linux/Intel servers onto a newer z (z10? - currently z9BC). 
But that's just wild rumor. I know for a fact that IT management wants a 
Windows-only environment.
