Yes: Improvements have been made to both the dasdfmt tool and the Linux kernel to speed up the process of formatting a DASD. These changes are available upstream [1][2] (both are needed for an effect to become visible) and work is being done to get them integrated in upcoming distribution releases. The new code makes use of PAV and HyperPAV aliases, but can also provide a noticeable improvement without any aliases.
