Chris, With SLES12, there are some problems regarding formatting DASD:
Formatting dasd fails with Exit code: 1 https://www.suse.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7017001 Formatting multiple dasd fails with "Error code 2" https://www.suse.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7016994 It appears you may be hitting one of these, the resolution says A future yast2-s390 update will include the patch to resolve the problem. Customers affected by this issue can also contact SUSE Technical Support to request a PTF (temporary fix).
