I even saw a demo of migrating an AD controller to Samba a long time ago at one of the BrainShare conferences I attended. I can't speak for the Samba developers or their documentation. What they document is only what they know about, not what the various Linux distributions do under the covers. I would say to give it a try and see what happens.
