The KVM mode of qemu 2.12 build from source works fine.
For IBM z, the version in SLES12/15 Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04
as well as RHEL 7-5 alt are fine.

You seem to use the system _emulation_ of QEMU - and a very old
one. I have not tried this.
