After showing Linux on S/390 (in “secret”) at WAVV in October 1999 we
thought there might be an audience for this. Most of us on the team at IBM
were very surprised (well shocked) at how many downloaded the Marist
distro. Working quickly Boas Betzler and Ed Gauthier got approval to take a
MP3000 to LinuxWorld in NYC in January 2000 to showcase the offering. We
were swamped at the IBM booth that year after Linus in his keynote said
that “IBM has a mainframe upstairs running Linux!”.
