z/VM doesn't hide the hardware. In just about all cases, if it won't run
in an LPAR, it also won't run under z/VM. I'm sure SLES 9 since it is so
old starts up in ESA/390 mode and then switches to z/Architecture mode (64
bit.) The z14 doesn't support ESA/390 mode for Linux, so SLES 9 will not
IPL in an LPAR or under z/VM. I'm not sure what level of z/VM you are on
now, but you can test it by shutting down Linux, entering SET MACHINE Z,
and then trying to IPL it.
