Have you tried the "noapic" kernel parameter at boot?
This was widely recommended as essential before QQ came out, but I haven't seen much
discussion of it since. I also don't know whether it's useful with 2.3.x kernels
(after a single lock-up, I'm running it on 2.3.51 due to FUD).
To try, wait for the LILO boot prompt and (within the 5-sec wait window) enter "linux
noapic" (or whatever label you've used for your kernel). To make it permanent, add
"noapic" to the "append" option of the appropriate kernel stanza in /etc/lilo.conf,
then rerun lilo.
