with a mirror you can see it. check out the lowest part of the ISA slot.
if you happen to have an v1.1. board, it's possible that an
underdimensioned capacitor is causing large voltage swings that may very
well be ticked by the current drawn. it is easy to repair yourself if
you can handle a soldering iron.

no, you can put in the stuff everywhere you want.

hmm. anyways. again be sure you HAVE a good supply. memory is fed off
the 3.3v IIRC. any instable voltage there crashes the system.
check out the separate DIMMs with memtest; if that all works fine, see
if you can run reliable with less memory -- check out lm_sensors and
check the voltages there.
