Yeah, I like it. It looks much better than KDE 1.x. The tools are more
usable. KNode the newsreader is great. The file/html/ftp etc. tool
knoqueror still needs work and does odd things copying files/sub
directories.

Fact.

>couple times from a few users.
Because it is true.
DOS was more stable until you put a memory manager like QEMM on it.
Of course you couldn't play any decent games without one.
Same goes for Linsux.
Leave it sitting at the CLI and it will run forever. Leave it in the
back room running a server using the CLI and it will run forever.
Put the GUI on it, any one will do, run some applications that NORMAL
folks would run, like audio/video/graphics/spreadsheets and so forth
and the stability goes down the drain,.
Fact!
>So, in response to Windows CEMENT (CE,ME,NT) Win2K has a poor MTTF, they now
>all respond with the above party line.
The MTTF doesn't concern me because quite frankly my experience
differs. My server running Win2k is up all the time and I do heavy
processing of digital audio (like hours to remove clicks and scratches
and process using FFT) under Win98SE without a problem.
I can't even browse the web and use pan to read news without
generating a timebomb in Gnome.
>It isn't true at all. X, obviously, has a lower MTTF than Linux proper, but
>even the worst X server has a higher MTTF than 2K.
X is a mess and is quite unstable depending upon what combination of
applications are running.

I had the same tought a couple of days ago but its really not so different
from some time ago.. but i expect something like that in the near future.
They will try the same methods they used towards OS/2.
At the moment they are actually quite helpfull.... especially
flatfish/Steve/[put a silly name here], Jan/Conrad and Chad - so please
dont try to discourage them. Lets forget these guys and wait for the other
bunch to arrive :-)

Yes.. the desktop is the battlefield.... and who knows Windows desktop
better than Linux users that mostly come from the Windows enviroment?

And its allways about XFree86- an application that runs almost perfectly on
my desktop.. they are not aware of the fact that its just an implementation
of X and that one can buy other Xservers.

This is all nonsense, either the hardware is supported or it isnt.
The hardware support is in the kernel, right out of the box.

One shit application should not be able to bring down a machine with bad
memory management.
Thats the whole reason behind "protected memory" (look it up), claire. WindowsME
is supposed to have that.
The same application does not bluescreen W2K though, to be fair. It simply causes
explorer to lock up and "not respond", but a quick 3 finger salute and a killing
of every running process (except "system idle" of course. Yay VMS) brings it back
up in a sickly but usable state.

Oh really now? This is possible under MacOS (which has "by hand" protected
memory management), but how exactly does one do that under linux again?
