Get yourself a cheap computer...like, that's headed for the trash bin.
Put Linux on it. Hook up your printers.
Attach Linux machine to an ethernet network in your house.
Ta-DAH. Powerful print manager for next-to-nothing $$$.
Oh..and you can be REALLY slick and make it your firewall, too.

Ok, that's a little more information.

Nope, not the gateway hardware at all, but rather what you've done. The
reason two distributions have problems is because you've made the disk
unuseable for them with PM.

Yes, I was simply informing you, not criticizing. the word "C: drive" has
no meaning in Linux, since it doesn't use letters, but rather a single tree
based file system.

Ok, this is the problem. You've created a partition with PM. Don't do
that. Just like when you try and create partitions with PM for Dos or
Windows, it's never a good idea. Instead, use PM to resize your partitions
and use fdisk to delete a partition large enough for Linux. Then let Linux
partition the free space on the drive itself.
Basically you've confused the setup program. You're lucky you didn't wipe
out your disk, since Red Hat will do that if you choose the wrong option.
For what you've spent on two copies of Linux, you could have bought a
dedicated hard disk for it and downloaded a copy or bought a cheap-bytes
copy, then you wouldn't have to worry so much.
In any event, I have to wonder why you partitioned your drive in 4
partitions? I guess I prefer one large drive to lots of smaller ones. It's
less wasteful of disk space and easier to manage. Oh well.
> Thanks for your advice--much appreciated.
No problem. I've been there. I've had tons of problems with Linux as well
over the years. I actually started installing Linux about 1994 and it's
come a long way since then.

Once MS dos creates a partition using fdisk, windows won't go out of
that space unless you have another partition to tell it to go to ...
like D:
Once Linux is installed and then when you are in windows, use fdisk to
look at the partition table and you will see it say "Unknown o/s". This
again, windows will leave alone. LILO, the boot manager can
successfully reside in the Master Boot Record known as MBR. Note that
you have to first have windows installed first before Linux, otherwise
the windows installation will remove the references to LILO and Linux
won't boot.
But, seeing that your not in a business situation and you do know how to
install windows, you can use the emergency boot diskette of windows and
just eliminate all the partitions, then recreate just a C: partition
only for the entire hard drive. Mark it bootable. Don't format it.
Then boot up the linux CD. You will find out in a hurry, about 20 - 30
minutes, whether things will install or not. One thing I found in my
installation problems was the on board sound chip. If you have an
onboard sound chip and you hear no sound, goto the web site
http://www.alsa.com. You have to know what kind of sound chip you have
or sound board. There you have to download the correct driver for your
board or chip. Before installing the sound driver you have to unload
all references to any sound modules in the kernel. Then install the
sound driver and then reboot. However, if this linux distro fails to
install, remind RedHat of the Moss-Magnusen Warranty Act... they either
have to fix it, replace it, or refund you.
Its good for 90 days. Its the law!
> Thanks very much for taking the time to write this. I'm glad to hear

No, you're not losing your marbles. :-) Try installing Solaris 8 x86.
That one never had decent install instructions... matter of fact the
webstart install is sort of broken. But I figured it out... one word at
a time. Some commercial o/ses go in easy and some take a boston lawyer
to figure it out.

I really don't know why they did this. I've asked many a MSCE and never
got a straight answer or was given some other reason, but that didn't
jive up right.
I hope this helps. (Now that I think about it, an MSCE told me that you
could only put 4 partitions on one hard drive....?)

You're running Mandrake 7, hence, the limitation still applies.
