Considering the only decent Office Suite (Office 2001) is not even
Carbonised, its not even worth moving. If I was a new Mac owner, I would
wait until Autumn (US Date), until the carbonised version of Microsoft
Office has been released, however, if StarOffice (through and act of god or
something) releases OpenOffice before the carbonised version of MS Office is
released, that maybe the boost Apple was looking for.

That's it, precisely.

You know...since Microsoft say that ANY data submitted into the Hailstorm
system is their theirs to do with as they wish...that means that they
are even the right to *NOT* deliver it to the intended recipients.

I think Bill should prove to use that he *never* intended for such a
fucked up up agreement by FIRING all of the lawyers who are both
Microsoft employees and worked on this user agreeement.

The first is easy to know - if he regularly gets Word documents relating
to his work, for instance (one of my agents sends contract copies out in
Word, which is not unreasonable because the formatting is often
important and companies like the documents to look pretty).

The second, which asserts an absolute, can't be known absolutely unless
it's a tautology ("I define "junk mail" to include anything in HTML,
therefore all HTML mail is junk"). The trouble with absolutes is that
they cause trouble when they're wrong, perhaps he's missing some
important things buried in the junk and will never know it...

However, the truth or otherwise of one has no connection with the truth
value of the other.

>Or perhaps is what you mean that, to date, this is a true statement -
>that you've never gotten anything useful sent as html but you have at

Well, if he deletes all HTML mail unread then he never will receive
anything important in HTML mail, so it will be self-fulfilling...

Not nearly as bad as Russian currency.

If it was Russian currency, it would be only worth about $0.13

It is unfortunate that people still think that Java is only any use in
applets. In fact I would argue that Java is not very useful for general
applet programming for the 'net anymore.
Donn, luckily Java is VERY useful as a general programming language that
_does not need a browser_ but can be run as an application. Also it is
very useful for server side programming using Servelts
http://www.linux.com/sysadmin/newsitem.phtml?sid=1&aid=11992 (this is
very useful if you don't get on well with PERL)

Really, as in all areas there are pro's and con's in every language, but
I can tell you that as a general programing language it is a joy to work
with. Java has a very rich class library and a mostly sensible design
that produces real portable applications that enables me to develop
under Linux and deploy to win32. Also Java has been slated for
performance - this may have been true quite a few years ago, but these
days the gap is very close with the standard inclusion of optimising
run-time compilers. Of course you can also choose to pre-compile your
application to native code. So when you think "Java" don't think
"applet" think "General programming language that makes my life easier".
It is not great for everything, but then nothing is - which is why most
people have a number of languages in their tool chest.

Happy Hacking

My apologies, obviously somebody at MS is overloading the term Hardware
Abstraction Layer. The NT/W2K HAL that provides the direct I/F between the
low level OS routines and the hardware is definitely not what they are
talking about.
