I could never understand this enamoration with HTML-based interfaces. There's a good
case
for using HTML in a normal web-based environment, but why the hell one would want to
use
this crude and slow method in a standalone system is beyond me. Maybe they're
influenced
by Microsoft with their huge "innovations" like "look at your desktop as a web page"!
Wow.
End of desktop as we knew it. What you need on a factory floor is an industrial
air/water-tight enclosure with a freaken touch screen (which you can purchase either
built
into the strengthened box itself--there are products like that--or as a hardware
add-on)
and then a normal, fast-responding gui like Qt, or anything at all really. Just make
sure
your buttons are really HUGE, so that you can easily poke them with a gloved finger.
Btw,
these pokes come through as mouse clicks, so, programmatically, it is kinda
mouse-driven.

Linus provided the kernel, using Minix (which WAS a complete OS). Most of
the OS was borrowed from Berkeley UNIX and the GNU project, which was by that
time largely developed on Berekeley UNIX.

If Linus had never existed, we'd still be in the same place with a BSD instead
of a Linux kernel under the hood. I'm not saying Linus didn't do an impressive
job, but he wasn't necessary nor sufficient for the "Linux phenomenon" to
happen.

And Linux is not any kind of competitor on the desktop. Apple *is*. And in the
back office there's a boatload of UNIX systems in use.

Sadly one can not always find the resources required in the
"sea of noise". I am not a academic researcher. I am a computer
enthusiast who often needs information on older products. Rarely can I
find the required info without running into HTML hell. or Javascript
fired websites that hate Lynx with a passion. Or to use google and
find bazillions of the same useless info that does not apply to my
needs. Or to find that the info I need is no longer available on the
web or never WAS. When was the last time you searched for a manual for
a Practical peripherals PM144mt external modem? No where to be found
unless one wants to ante up the credit card!

Unlike the local stores I cannot hold a piece of equipment
that I am considering. I can not look at it closely. There is still a
strong need for physical contact with the product. You mentioned cars.
I cannot drive but... You want to test drive the products before you
buy them. If you are going to your local "Ford" dealership to test
drive a F150 you might as well BUY there as its available right there!
No shipping, No waiting for the car or computer or whatever to be
delivered. No aggrevation of returning an item that does NOT fit or
meet your needs.
I run into this in the computer areas. I wanted a new SCSI
hard drive. Unless I know what type of plug it has (from seeing it in
a local retailer). I may end up buying the Wrong drive type. I mean I
need Scsi-2 50 pin. I don't want a Scsi-2 Wide 68 pin! or a SCA drive!!
Unforcunatly the only drive maker that makes it simple to figure out
what is what is Seagate. I almost gave up on a Quantum purchase as I did
not know what I was looking AT! It was only after I called the company
that I found by talking to a tech that the Quantum IS compatible
(bought two of them). Most people are not going to go through that
much effort to purchase a hard drive! If I priced the drive based on
what I had to deal with in time as well as the cost per megabyte. I
would have rather bought the drive locally. paid the 6.0 % Connecticut
sales tax (it would have been the same as the shipping). With the
ability to return the unit if it did not fit or was defective!

Why not use Telix? I used Telix 3.15 and the 3.22 versions
with Zmodem on a XT! it works great. Just drop the windows 3.1 in the
trash on the way out please ;) I mean 40MB of Ram should be MORE than
enough for Zmodem! set up ramdrive.sys and you can stick the extras in
the ramdrive (telix and its guts for example).

They couldnt possible do something like that with MP3. It would certainly
be illegal.
Yes they play that game, but they will not sabotage some competitor that
openly. What i dont understand is why some people here are so concerned
with MS - i think we should ignore them as long as it does not affect us
and do our own thing.
Stuff like this, the new anti piracy scheme in XP/Office/etc and the terms
of usage for Passport are simply wonderfull news for those that use
competitive OS'es. Just let them dig theyr own grave.

I don't think this is true. BSD has been around for
a long time. Despite the excellence of the kernel
(and the whole OS), it hasn't stormed the OS scene
like Linux has. How do we explain this? What did
Linus do that was different from the BSD team? We
could guess and say that he opened up the development
to all hardware platforms. But then again, we already
had extensive support for diverse platforms in NetBSD.
So what is the cause? I would guess it is Linus's
adoption of the GPL. Like it or not, the GPL capures
the imagination and motivation of the masses. Hence
the "Linux phenomenon". It seems to have some mojo
the other licensing schemes lack.

So, although Linus alone wasn't a sufficient cause
of the "Linux phenomenon", he was a necessary one,
in that he took that necessary step of changing the
original Linux licensing terms over to GPL. The rest
is history.

Special prize to the person who can find and explain the largest number
of lies in the previous statement.

Hint hint: Most of them are "false premise" fallacies.

for starters, "State capitalism" is a not just a misnomer, it's goddamned
lie, conjured up for propaganda purposes.

"Professor" Scott Erb DAMN WELL KNOWS IT"S A LIE, but he spews it anyways.

Also, Japan is not a democracy. Clue for the fucking clueless:

Merely holding elections does NOT a democracy make. To be a democracy,
you must institute mob rule. Japan is definitely NOT a mob-rule
society, therefore, it's not a democracy.

Considering that NOTHING in your preceding statement had even the
slightest relationship to fact, it's not surprising that your conclusion
has no relationship to facts, either.

1. Was Japan a fascist country in the 1930's
a) no
B) YES

2. Since the 1930', in what way has Japan's economy been re-structured
to remove fascism. Accuracy counts, so be precise.

By the way....Professor...how's it feel to be getting your ass

Wrong. Free Markets are fundamental to the definition of Capitalism.
Fascism's oppressive state involvement in the economy PREVENTS any
true Free Market...thus, Capitalism and Fascism are mutually exclusive.
