If you read the security newsgroups you will have noticed that there
have been security problems with most if not all Windows based
personal firewalls.
Now if you only want outgoing connections (this includes udp and
icmp which although connectionless iptables keeps state) on your
single network connected home PC then it is so simple with iptables.
For example (stripped down version of the script I use to setup
iptables):

$INSMOD ip_conntrack

$IPTABLES -P FORWARD DROP # I have 2 NIC's so just to be safe

$IPTABLES -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

The juicy line is the last one. One rule protects you from just about
everything. I've nmap'd my system from the outside with this single
rule while running ethereal on the interface. No matter what kind of
scan I tried, SYN, SYN ACK, UDP, etc it always reported that there was
a filter blocking all ports (can't remember the actual wording).
Ethereal showed the packets coming in but nothing returned. Yet I can
make any outgoing connections I want and also pings, dns queries, etc.
PASV ftp works. Of course you could use the ip_conntrack_ftp module if
you need normal ftp.

Perestroika is the Russian word for RESTRUCTURING.
And that, indeed, is all that happened. The Soviet Union structure
was abolished, and overt state-ownership of industry was replaced with
"private ownership" which, conveniently enough, was carried out by
giving title of the industrial properties to high-ranking Communist
Party officials. However...the title isn't real...as more than one
"owner" of these properties has lost "ownership" of "his" industrial
property by nothing more than a vote in the Duma to take the property
and give it to another Communist official.
Talk to any Russian still living there..and they will tell you,
Nothing has changed, other than Western goods (which they cant afford)
are now in the stores.
