ppdd is an advanced encrypted file system for i386 Linux.

It is used in a similar way to the loop device and offers simplicity
and speed plus full strength encryption (128 bit).

The design takes into consideration the fact that data on disc has a
long lifetime and that an attacker may have the matching plaintext to
much of the cyphertext.

A combination of master/working pass phrases offers enhanced security
for backup copies.

Current status is BETA quality and comments on the
implemenation and underlying cryptography are most welcome.

The latest version allows root filesystem encryption thus ensuring
that no plaintext data can be accidently left on disc.

It consists of a kernel patch plus support programs and is not
intended for novices at this stage.

Available from: http://pweb.de.uu.net/flexsys.mtk/ppdd-0.6.zip

Various people have reported difficulty downloading .tgz files so the
latest version is now packaged as a .zip file which contains a .tar
and a pgp signature.

My pgp public key is available from: http://pweb.de.uu.net/flexsys.mtk
and from key servers.

Subject: GNU Queue 1.099 load-balancing system/batch processing environment
Date: Sat, 2 Jan 1999 02:58:16 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

This is to announce release 1.099 of GNU Queue.

Queue is a load-balancing system for UNIX that allows intuitive control
of remote executing jobs through job control by the local shell. You can
suspend, resume, send signals, and learn of termination events at the
remote end by sending these to a local process, which acts as a
proxy for the job executing on the remote host.

Queue also features a more traditional batch processing mechanism, where
users are informed of the status of remote jobs via email.

Remote jobs may be scheduled based on a number of factors, including
modified load average at the remote end, time of day scheduling, number
of slots available for process type, etc., etc.

Queue also functions as a handy replacement for rsh when executing jobs
within the local cluster; some MPI support is available.

Version 1.099 of GNU Queue now features:

        Blinking-lights automatic installation (we hope).

Queue now periodically reads the host ACL from a file using
code contributed by Dave van Leeuwen.

Root privileges are no longer required to install GNU Queue.

A 30+ page comphrensive manual along with the usual manpage.

MPI support through "qsh" compatibility syntax.

        Numerous additional improvements, changes, and bug-fixes;
        see http://bioinfo.mbb.yale.edu/~wkrebs/ChangeLog.txt for
        the complete list.

Download instructions for Queue may obtained off the home page,
http://www.gnu.org/software/queue . GNU/Linux, Solaris, SUN-OS,
and HP-UX platforms are currently supported.

RPMS for Redhat Linux 5.2 can be downloaded from:
http://bioinfo.mbb.yale.edu/~wkrebs/queue-1.099-1.i386.rpm.gz and
http://bioinfo.mbb.yale.edu/~wkrebs/queue-1.099-1.src.rpm.gz

On-line documentation for GNU Queue can be found at:

| European Universities Linux User Groups lists |
+-----------------------------------------------+

This simple ASCII art should be sufficient to kick off
not one, but two announcements:

1. There is a set of 5 mailing lists for Linux User
Groups at European universities, hochschule and
other places where higher and/or technical education
   is taught.

The main reason for the lists is to bring together
the different LUGs and hacker/students in Europe and
to share our knowlegde without the incendiary nature
   of interaction-by-usenet.

   The lists are:

   - eulug-action What should we do with our LUG?
   - eulug-announce Announcements by LUGs about activities
   - eulug-devel GURU-talk (relatively speaking)
   - eulug-help How do I do this-and-that without
                        starting a flamewar?
   - eulug-misc ... euhmm? ...

Some of the lists could also be of interest to LUGs
from outside Europe or to individual students inside
Europe. Like with all Linux things, everybody is free
   to join so subscribe today...

2. You've seen the ASCII art. Now you know we need a LOGO
for the EULUG lists and info centre...

Consider this the official announcement for the logo
contest for the EULUG site. Rules and conditions will
be made available on humbolt.geo.uu.nl very soon.

The number of users of the Linux Operating System has grown

little or no thought about the security of their machines. In
addition, the standard installation procedure of most Linux
distributions results in a machine with maximal capabilities but also
the maximum number of possible security holes. A search of a usenet
archiving site such as dejanews would quickly find a large number of
linux security discussion threads scattered across numerous existing
newsgroups.

The existing newsgroup comp.unix.security is useful but its discussion
content is aimed more at the unix admistrator level. Therefore a
newsgroup specifically aimed at the home/small business Linux user
would complement rather than replace discussion on comp.unix.security.

to security of machines running the Linux Operating System.

The posting of commercial information to this group is permitted only

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
