Linux Without Borders
This E-list is dedicated to discussion and implementation of the
vision that in countries whose citizens are not yet rich enough
to own Personal Computers(PCs), computers must be *shared*; and
that the way to enable sharing while preserving individual
privacy is to install Linux, a multi-user, multi-tasking
operating system, on PCs owned cooperatively, or by businesses.
This will enable citizens to establish their own accounts on a
commonly owned, or rented, computer, where they can do all the
things that citizens of wealthier countries can do: write, do
accounts, and -- perhaps most important -- use "their" computer
to communicate with other people, in their own country and
throughout the world.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
We are pleased to announce version 2.1 of FFTW, available from our web site:
http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~fftw
FFTW is a free collection of fast C routines for computing the Discrete
Fourier Transform in one or more dimensions. It includes complex, real,
and parallel transforms, and can handle arbitrary array sizes efficiently.
This release contains many improvements in the parallel transforms,
besides various miscellaneous changes (see the release notes at
http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~fftw/release-notes.html).
We now support parallel real-complex transforms, in addition to complex
transforms, for both shared-memory threads and MPI. Distributed
one-dimensional transforms with MPI are also newly included. All of the
parallel transform code is now folded into the main documentation and the
autoconf-based installation process of FFTW.
Cordially,
Steven G. Johnson

Subject: AOLServer external database driver for InterBase
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 18:30:23 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
External database driver
This driver is implemented as standalone executable. Once started,
it acts as a database proxy daemon which translates AOLServer
database requeste into InterBase specific API calls. AOLServer
communicates with proxy daemon via TCP/IP, so they can be running
on different hosts.
By separating external driver to another host, we can access
databases for which no client library is available on platform
AOLserver runs. An example for this would be InterBase 4.0 running on
Linux host which we want to connect to AOLServer running on Solaris
box. Let's assume that InterBase client library is not available
for Solaris. So we build external db driver on Linux host using
available Linux InterBase client library. Now AOLServer on Solaris
and proxy daemon on Linux can talk to each other using AOLServer's
database-independent external data source protocol.
..... and the bad news:
Development of internal version is abandoned because InterBase client
API is not thread safe. Therefore, if you're still using it, you
are urged to migrate to external version.
..... however:
You can still use the same InterBase datasource and the same C/Tcl
scripts you developed so far.
Current release: 1.0.0

Sebastian Skracic

Subject: efax version 0.9beta available
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 18:28:14 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I have uploaded efax version 0.9beta to metalab.unc.edu. This is
a beta test version of a program that lets you send and receive
faxes using any fax modem. The changes from the previous version
are described in the README file that is appended below.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
This is the README file for a pre-release beta version, version
0.9beta, of efax, a small ANSI C/POSIX program that sends and
receives faxes using any fax modem (Class 1, 2 or 2.0).
efax is smaller and easier to install than HylaFAX or
mgetty+sendfax. As one user put it ``EFAX is a nice simple
program for single user systems.''
The ``fax'' command, a shell script, lets you send, receive, view
and print faxes. In larger systems, faxes can be sent by
printing to a ``fax'' printer and received faxes can be e-mailed
as MIME attachments to an administrator for distribution. efax
can also pass incoming data calls to a getty program.
The efax package includes ``efix,'' a program to convert between
various image file formats. To fax Postscript files you will
need Ghostscript. To view faxes you can use any program that
displays PGM files (e.g. xloadimage or xv). efix can also
convert received files to Postscript or HP Laserjet formats for
printing.
This version of the program was written & tested under Linux 2.0.
Previous versions have been compiled and used under most versions
of Unix and should work with minor changes on any UNIX with an
ANSI C compiler and libraries that include select(2) and
termios(4).
efax is distributed as a gzip'ed tar file, efax09beta.tar.gz. It
may be obtained by anonymous FTP from metalab.unc.edu in
/pub/Linux/Incoming or /pub/Linux/apps/serialcomm/fax.
Changes from version 0.8a to version 0.9
- - fixed bad (0x0 pixel) file output on new glibc systems
- - fixed bad file output on 64-bit systems
- - automatic selection of baud rate and class
- - hardware flow control made optional
- - modernized directory and file names
- - many bugs removed, others added
Manifest
The efax distribution should contain the following files:
README - this file
COPYING - the GNU General Public License
Makefile - makefile to make all/install/clean
efax.c - program to send and receive faxes
efix.c - program to convert between file formats
efaxmsg.{h,c} - functions to print errors, warnings, etc
efaxlib.{h,c} - functions common to efax and efix
efaxio.{h,c} - low-level modem i/o functions
efaxos.{h,c} - OS-dependent functions
fax.1 - man page for fax(1)
efax.1 - man page for efax(1)
efix.1 - man page for efix(1)
fax - a (Bourne) shell script to create, send,
receive, view and print faxes.
Installation
Edit the makefile and change the compile command and destination
directories if required.
Type "make" to compile the efax and efix binaries.
Edit the configuration information at the beginning of the
``fax'' script according to the comments.
Type "make install" to install the fax script, the binaries and
the man pages.
Read the fax(1) man page first for information on using efax.
The efax(1) man page has details on resolving problems, setting
up a network fax server and using efax to handle both fax and
data calls.
