Subject: gengetopt 1.0.0 - Generate C main that parses options using getopt_long
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 21:14:05 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

gengetopt generate a C 'main' function that uses 'getopt_long' function
to parse the options, validate them and do certain tasks in response.

'gengetopt' is distributed under 'GPL', but the code generated is not
under any license.

'gengetopt' is perfect if you are too lazy (like me) to write all stuff
required to call 'getopt_long', or if you have a little program and wish
it took options.

Generated code works if you use 'autoconf' or 'automake'.

gengetopt 1.0.0 is the first public release, and can be found here:

http://arturo.directmail.org/code/gengetopt/gengetopt-1.0.0.tar.gz

And a little web page here:

Subject: Nut - Nutrition Software
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 21:48:41 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Nut allows you to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is
the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release
12, which contains 5,976 foods.

This database of food composition tables contains values
for calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, total fat,
saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat,
and cholesterol; vitamins A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin,
pantothenic acid, B6, folate, B12, C, and E; and minerals
calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus,
potassium, selenium, sodium, and zinc. Nutrient levels
are expressed as a percentage of the "Daily Values",
the familiar standard of food labeling in the United
States. In addition, approximate levels of omega-6 and
omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are shown.

You may search this list of foods and view nutrient values
for different serving sizes; you may also rank foods in
order of level of a particular nutrient. You may change
the daily calorie level to correspond to your personal
metabolism, and the levels for fat, carbohydrates, and
fiber are automatically adjusted. You may add your own
recipes to the database, by creating them from the foods
in the database.

This software is available from SAL, Scientific Applications
on Linux, http://SAL.KachinaTech.COM/Z/0/NUT.html . SAL is
the first place to look for scientific and engineering
software.

Thanks,

Jim Jozwiak

Subject: The Computer Underground sells Linux computers and provides networking and
programming support.

If you have any questions, please send e-mail to
    [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or go to our website at
    www.tcu-inc.com
or call us at

What is The Computer Underground?

A group of UNIX consultants who sell, support, and provide networking and
programming consultation for Linux computers. We sell from the sub-$1,000
computer market to the Beowulf (super computer) and RAID market. In
addition, The Computer Underground has hired a specialist in UNIX to
become TCUs Beowulf and RAID expert.

Here is an example of a sub-$1,000 computer we are selling.
I would say that the only two items that would need any upgrades would be
the video card and memory.
http://www.tcu-inc.com/hardware/Specials/0.html

Our company tries to focus its programming skills on Perl, PHP, database
SQL (postgresql, mysql, oracle, etc), Javascript, HTML, UNIX shell
scripting, C++, NT programming, Java, and other languages. For networking,
we focus on providing Linux solutions for Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX
environments. Yes, we provide WindowsNT support, but we prefer to provide
LINUX support. Linux (and soon FreeBSD) is the key ingredient for The
Computer Underground, but our consultants do have a wide variety of
skills in other UNIX operating systems and also NT.

In addition, The Computer Underground has created informal connections to
other consultation companies to provide our customers with other sources
of computer consultation. We accept no kickbacks. We just ask that the
other companies make our customers happy, that is all.

The Computer Underground will also have direct ties to Global Technology.
TCU will be assisting Global Technology in their project management
starting
in May.

In addition, The Computer Underground is also directly involved with the
Crossroads 2001 server providing customers with a gateway to the internet.

- --------------------------------------------------------------
The philosophy behind TCU:

The Computer Underground has its name based on revolution. Out with the
old, in with the new (unless the old is still very good). We want to
provide to our customers the technologies that are the best for them. This
means, we keep our hands clean of any deals that may go on in the
background. We accept no kickbacks from any referrals, we will not let
other companies advertise our on website, we try not to over advertise our
own company with stupid java programs and animated gifs, and we try to
keep our website clean and simple and useable by all web browsers. We let
people know what they want to know, and even present links to other
websites so that people can compare and contrast our products and services
to other companies or other information centers. We don't want to sell
unless the customer feels comfortable buying a product from us.

We will be redesigning our website in May.

Thanks for reading this!
Mark
President of TCU

Subject: QNX-style synchronous message passing for (RT)Linux
Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 21:40:42 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

We are relatively new to the LINUX/RTLinux business, but have had a
number of years experience with the QNX realtime OS.

Like all people who have used a programming paradigm and toolset long
enough, you want the same toolset everywhere you go.

With that in mind, we have made a crude stab at providing LINUX/RTLinux
with the basics of the QNX style synchronous message passing in the form
of a static library.

In our scheme the "sender" owns a block of shared memory. The
"receiver" listens on a fifo for a single integer. This integer
represents the index of the "senders" record in a memory mapped file
table. The "receiver" connects to the "senders" shared memory retrieves
the message and posts it's reply to the same location. The "sender"
listens to it's reply fifo and unblocks and retrieves it's reply.
Presto we have fully synchronous QNX style message passing.

We have already used this on a number of projects with great success.
Recently we have built a Tcl extension which exposes Send/Receive/Reply
commands to our Tcl/Tk scripts as well.

We are ready to share this source code with the open source community in
hopes that others can benefit from the paradigm.

                            Quotes 1.4-0
                        *******************

What is Quotes
In short financial quotations and Linux news. With this program
you can fetch the latest Stock quotations for up to 10 stocks
registered in NASDAQ or NYSE (quotes are delayed 15-20 mins.),
also currency conversion (any-to-any) in case you are looking
for the right moment to exchange and as a bonus Linux news from
        Slashdot!.

Problems fixed
        * Some of the servers in the Nasdaq pool have quotation
scripts with differing output thus causing spurious
output formatting problems. This has been helped
          for what I know.

Enhancements
        * Multiple currency support, with addCurrency you now have the
same functionality of addStock but for currency exchange.
        * Output format and alignment has been improved (CLM).
        * Includes QuotesMailer a convenience script to be used in a
crontab to have your quotations waiting for you when you
          log in.
        * System and Personal resource file(s). Added
          clearStock/clearCurrency directives.
        * Has a new option (-c|-config) that shows all configured
parameters as well as handlers, stocks and currencies that have
          been defined.
        * It is also now available in RPM format

Introduction

1999 is turning out to be a great year for Linux. The Linux World Expo, held
the first week of March, turned out to be a huge success. Many major
corporations are now publically backing Linux and making moves to support
Linux in a huge way. Almost all of the big names have come on board to
support Linux: Dell, IBM, Gateway, Compaq, Oracle, Corel, Apple, Informix,
Silicon Graphics, Hewlett Packard, Sun...the list goes on and on with only
one notable exception: and rumors abound that even that company is feeling
the pressure. Business and hobby users are reaping the benefits of Linux and
Open Source software - proving that it isn't just for hackers anymore. The
Linux "Community" becomes more diverse everyday - and that's a Good Thing.

This is our first newsletter of the year, but it certainly won't be the
last. We've pulled together some great news items, Linux testimonials, great
links for Linux Users and some reader comments and feedback. We've also
taken the liberty of highlighting some of Linux Mall's more popular and
useful items and throwing a little humor in as well. Some new sections have
been added to the Newsletter: Linux and Business and Linux Philosophy. Keep
in touch with us and help us make 1999 the Year of Linux.

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter From the Publisher

Boy, has business at Linux Mall been great over the last year. Every person
I hire seems to get swamped with things to do almost immediately. Ryan
Coulter, who I introduced as our new editor last year, got an opportunity to
follow his dream in Theater, and resigned as editor after his first "Linux
Newsletter". Fortunate for him, but unfortunate for us. Then I had intended
to make the time to personally put out more newsletters, but somehow other
things kept coming up. It has been almost a year since Ryan left, and
finally I have located a new editor. Drum Roll please! Introducing "Zonker"
as he likes to be called (yes, after the comic strip), as our new editor.
His real name is Joe B. Brockmeier, he is a former English major, broadcast
journalist and Linux nut with plenty of experience in all three. Please join
me in welcoming him as the new editor of Linux Newsletter! If I don't give
him too many other tasks he will probably even get them out monthly and on
time from here on out. Let's hope, and Enjoy!
