This is an official announcement and call for participation for the
Linux Demo Day project (www.linuxdemo.org). The goal of this project is
to coordinate a worldwide demonstration of Linux for the thousands of
people who have heard of Linux due to the recent media coverage it's gotten,
but have _never seen Linux in action_. In addition, the demonstrations
will also help spread the word about Linux to the even larger number of
users who are not even aware that there is an alternative to using a
Microsoft product on their PC.

The basic idea behind this project is for LUGs to go into schools, shopping
malls, computer stores, or where ever they can/want to get permission, and
setup demonstration of Linux. Show off GIMP, GNOME, KDE, Applix, Q3, Civ,
Applixware, StarOffice, WordPerfect, and the many other applications that
allow you to replace your Windows desktop with a Linux box. In addition,
the participants would handout info pamphlets about Linux and possibly
give out free CDs and other Linux stuff.

Currently this project is just a crazy idea that I have, but
hopefully there are enough other Linux nuts out there that we can pull
this off. We need all sorts of help. Writers to write/translate
pamphlets, a logo for our pamphlets and t-shirts, a few people to help
with the web site, etc, etc. Most importantly, we need LUGs to participate
in the project by going out and setting up demos.

The date for the demo day is somwhere betweeen Sept. 12-19th. The
reason is because according to Linus[1], this is when kernel 0.01
was released, so what better way to celebrate the Linux's bday than
to expose it to more people?

Please join the mailing list if you have any ideas or just want to find
out more about the project. To join, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with 'subscribe' in the message body.

For more background on my motivation for this project, see
http://www.linuxdemo.org/about.shtml

I will be at Linux Expo next week and would love to get together
with any Linux users who don't think I'm completely insane and want
to discuss ideas for the project.

The web page, like the project, is just starting up, so please drop
me a note if you have problems with it.

                Linux Mall Announcement:
Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 Now Available Date: 5/12/99

Caldera has gone gonzo with GUI in the latest version of OpenLinux. Version
2.2 unleashes the Lizard (LInux wiZARD) enhanced installation utility.
Caldera's Lizard is an entirely graphical setup program that autoprobes your
system to detect your hardware, making this Linux distribution a snap to
install.

What if you already have Windows on your machine? No problem. OpenLinux 2.2
comes with a special edition of Partition Magic that helps you get your hard
drive ready for Linux while you're in Windows. It doesn't get much easier
than this! BootMagic is also included to make dual-booting painless.

Of course, installation isn't everything. OpenLinux 2.2 comes with
WordPerfect 8 Download Edition, StarOffice 5.0 Personal Edition, Netscape
Communicator 4.51, the KDE desktop manager, and a slew of other productivity
software. Not to mention all the normal networking, development and apps
that you'd expect with a Linux distribution.

True to its name, OpenLinux 2.2 is based on the 2.2.x version of the Linux
Kernel. This release supports larger hard drives, enhanced RAID support, a
wider variety of sound cards, up to 16 processors and more. You also get
power management for laptops, ability to read NTFS and FAT32, glibc support
with libc5 for backward compatibility and higher transfer rates for modems
than ever before. There are too many new features to list here - check out
the full list at LinuxMall.com.

The UserScripts package is a set of scripts which are useful for Sysadmins of
large sites with many users to be created at a time. Furthermore its possible
to assign each new user an individual password when creating the account. The
information about username, shell, HOME and password is taken from a file. The
same file can also be used when deleting these users later.
The latest version fixes a bug which made a corrupted shadow file, so updating
is recommended.

You can download the Userscripts from my homepage. They should also be avail-
able from sunsite soon. (make sure to get the latest version from sunsite:

Subject: WANTED/WWW: open software research survey
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 20:58:22 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Greetings fellow Linux users,

I would like to ask for your help.

I'm a student at the Computer Science department of the Oregon
Graduate Institute. I have been using Linux for about 4 years and I've
been fascinated with the OS itself as well as the way Open Source
movement works. I've been doing research in empirical software
engineering and I was wondering if the same principle that drives the
Open Software movement can work in other areas.

Empirical software engineering studies the way people work when they
perform software engineering tasks such as programming or
testing. The main difficulty in these studies is that people's
performance varies greatly (sometimes as much as 25:1), causing a lot
of "noise" in analysis. Therefore studies with 30 or 40 participants
are often just not powerful enough to get credible results.

This gave me the idea of an "Open software engineering study". Using
the same principle utilized by the Open Source software, such studies
could leverage contributions of multiple participants spread all over
the world to overcome the "noise" problem and help us better
understand the effectiveness of different software engineering methods
and techniques. All the participants would have to do is connect to a
central web server and spend a little time performing some simple
software engineering tasks online. The large number of participants
would allow us to filter out the "noise" and make a justified
conclusion about which techniques work better under which
circumstances.

This kind of study has never been attempted before and some of the
professors on my committee are not convinced that such studies would
be able to attract enough volunteers to make them worthwhile.

This is where I need your help. I have put together a survey to find
out if there are enough people out there who would like to make a
contribution to the field by participating in an internet-based
software engineering study. If you are interested in participating (or
even if you are not), please take 10 minutes out of your busy schedule
to take the survey. The results of this survey should either convince
my committee that online studies might work, or convince me that I'm
wasting my time working on them.

All people who take the survey will be entered in a drawing for prizes
(one of the prizes is the official RedHat 6.0).

To take the survey, point your web browsers to

http://software-engineering.cse.ogi.edu/surv/driver.cgi?R=9

(of course "software-engineering" is a Linux box! :)

If you have any questions or comments please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or call (503)748-7385.

Thank you for your time,

Alex Kotov

Subject: objc-2.3.2, Objective-C libraries for Linux/Unix
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 21:06:02 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Location:

        http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/devel/lang/objc/

This is a set of Objective-C class libraries and a translator that
translates Objective-C into plain ANSI C.

In 2.3.x, the libraries have been made '-refcnt safe', i.e. they can be
used in combination with the -refcnt option which (optionally) instructs
the translator to generate code for keeping track of reference counts for
objects.

As before, you need 2 packages : objc-2.3.2-bootstrap.tar.gz (to
bootstrap) and objc-2.3.2.tar.gz (because the actual compiler is written
itself).
