Subject: Sketch 0.6.0 - A vector drawing program
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:37:41 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Sketch 0.6.0 - A vector drawing program
Sketch is a vector drawing program for Linux and other unices. Its user
interface is similar to the interfaces typically found in drawing
programs for MS Windows, i.e direct manipulation to move and transform
objects, the notion of a currently selected object, etc.
Sketch is implemented almost completely in python, with the rest written
in C for performance reasons. Sketch is still incomplete, but the
current versions are quite usable and stable, I think.
Changes since version 0.5.5:
* Support for non-english messages via gettext. So far, there's only
support for German.
* The AI-filters can handle embedded raster images to some degree
now, and the export filter has support for text.
License:
- --------
Sketch is released under GNU Library General Public License.
Features:
- ---------
o Drawing primitives:
o Rectangles
o Ellipses
o Bezier curves
o Bitmap images: JPEG, GIF,...
(all types the Python Imaging Library can read)
o Encapsulated PostScript
o Text
o All objects, including images and text, can be rotated,
scaled, sheared, etc. (all affine transformations are
possible)
o Gradient fills
o Special Effects and Features:
o Use rectangles, ellipses and bezier objects as guides
o Blend Groups: Automatically updated interpolations of
arbitrary objects
o Text can be converted to bezier objects.
o Text along Path
o Exports Encapsulated PostScript and Adobe Illustrator files
o Imports XFig, Adobe Illustrator, Corel CMX and WMF files
For more information, have a look at the sketch webpage.

Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:30:34 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, version 1.4.0
HIGHLIGHTS: introduced a new config file, files.cfg, for managing
any system (text) file (e.g., /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/syslog.conf,
/etc/sudoers); much improved security via user-configurable
service access parameters and server-client callback; dozens of new
validation self-tests; bug fixes
"This is by far one of the most interesting/powerful tools I have
seen for Linux administration... an extremely interesting tool."
--Kurt Seifried, Linux Administrators Security Guide
(https://www.seifried.org/lasg)
PIKT is an innovative new paradigm for administering heterogeneous networked
workstations. PIKT monitors systems, reports problems, and fixes those
problems automatically whenever possible.
PIKT uses an embedded scripting language that sports an especially clean
syntax and introduces unique features to make your programming easier.
PIKT is also a sophisticated script preprocessor and control mechanism for
managing all of your administrative scripts. You can, setting aside the PIKT
language, even use it to version control, install, error log, and schedule
programs written in other languages, as well as to employ macros, meta-
comments, and C-like #if, #ifdef, and #include directives in Perl, AWK, etc.
PIKT is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Available now
for Solaris, SunOS, GNU/Linux, and now also FreeBSD. For more info, and
complete source code, documentation, and data files (all 40,000+ lines of
it), please visit the PIKT Web site at:

Subject: Kernel Driver for Hunt Engineering HEPC3/HECPCI1 TIM-40 cards
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 20:59:36 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce version 0.9.0 of the hepc3 package, a Linux kernel
driver for Hunt Engineering's HEPC3 and HECPCI1 TIM-40 DSP Motherboards. The
driver is available form the Sunsite archive (and mirrors) in the
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/kernel/misc-cards/
directory.
The driver supports the board's comports A and B in interrupt driven mode
(stable) and port A in PCI Bus Master DMA mode (still beta). The JTAG port is
NOT supported. I tested it with Linux 2.0.36 on an Intel box, but I added some
code to address the changes since 2.1.0. Please note that this is NOT tested.
Other pci platforms (PowerPC, Alpha, ...) should also work, but again this is
NOT tested.

May 25th Meeting - IP Masquerade
The May 25th meeting will feature an IP Masquerade presentation given by
John Beimler. IP Masquerade is a networking feature in Linux. If a
Linux host is connected to the Internet with IP Masquerade enabled, then
computers connecting to it (usually on the same LAN, but can also be
connected with other links such as modems or Parallel IP [PLIP]) can
reach the Internet as well, even though they have no officially assigned
IP addresses. IP Masquerade can allow a few people to surf the Internet
simultaneously with a single modem/network connection, only paying for a
single phone bill and Internet service charge at the end of the month.
Join us this Tuesday to learn more about IP Masquerade.
The Kalamazoo Linux Users Group (KLUG) meets at 7:00 PM each Tuesday at
Western Michigan's Dunbar Hall, Room 2205. Maps and directions can be
found at http://klug.armintl.com/meetings/maps.html .
Learn more about KLUG at http://klug.armintl.com/ .
June 1st Meeting - Beginner's Meeting
Next Tuesday's meeting is intended for those who are curious about
Linux, or want some help getting started. Bring your computer to the
meeting, and have Linux installed on it, at no charge. With a little
advance notice, you can also bring home your own Linux CD-ROM, produced
locally. Join us next Tuesday to learn more about KLUG and have your
questions answered about Linux. Now is the time to get started!

This list is for Linux users working with Compaq hardware.
You can ask here all your questions you have about Compaq and Linux.
We are busy to build a FAQ for this list. A very early beta version
you can find at http://www.yps.org/~diedvdyk/compaqfaq/compaqfaq.html
This list started at http://www.egroup.com as a discussion forum about
the new driver for the Smart Array controller.
You can find the driver at :

Canux.com Goes Live!
Lazarus Engineering Corporation Launches Canadian Linux Website; Will
sell Loki Entertainment Software's Linux Ports of Bestselling PC Games.
RENFREW, ONTARIO--Canux.com is now live! Lazarus Engineering Corporation
is pleased to announce the release of their new website canux.com.
Canux! is dedicated to the support of Canadians who have made Linux
their operating system of choice.
The exciting new site offers commercial software and hardware
specifically tailored to Linux and the Canadian public. As part of it's
kickoff, Lazarus has arranged with Loki Entertainment Software to be one
of the first locations in Canada to stock Loki's hot new title
"Civilization: Call to Power for Linux".
"This kind of support in Canada is long overdue," said Steve Cockwell,
chief executive officer and president of Lazarus. ``We're going to
deliver Linux products into the hands of Canadian consumers for about
the same price they would buy it for in a retail store. We are extremely
pleased to be partnering with Loki in this endeavor, as we believe that
they are and will continue to be one of the most respected names in the
Linux gaming community."
"Loki is thrilled to be bringing Civilization: Call to Power to the
Linux OS." said Scott Draeker, President of Loki Entertainment Software.
"Canux! has placed itself at the forefront of bringing this and future
Loki products to Canadian customers."
Canadians have had a difficult time finding commercial support for Linux
in their communities. Many retail locations do not yet even carry Linux
distributions and finding a commercial Linux product such as a game,
merchandise, or hardware is very difficult. Alternatives such as mail
order purchasing from the U.S. or traveling to a retail centre are often
inconvenient and expensive.
Canux! will continue to expand it's Linux oriented products and services
for the Canadian public.
Lazarus Engineering Corporation
Lazarus Engineering Corporation has been providing software and hardware
development and network engineering services to it's clients the world
over since 1993. Lazarus was incorporated in the province of Ontario
Canada in 1996. For more information please visit Lazarus' web site at
