MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Wed., 30 June 1999, 19:00 to 21:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

The June Meeting will be held from 19:00-21:00 on
June 30th at the Team America IS department, in North
Columbus.

We'll open with a brief `general Q and A session', describing varied
techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level problem
solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat' in the
sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

Then the Web, and the Tips teams are invited to report on status and
goals for the next quarter.

Next, we'll cut over to some short - 30 to 45 minute - presentations.
In no particular order, the following topics are `in development'
for presentation to the group.

Topic A presentations:
Paul H and Phil H will `draft' members of the group for Quickies,
and encourage them to `talk their way through' :
      - Using a GNU autoconf-based package, to install SSH on a
         host.
      - Rebuilding a `fetchmail' SRPM from scratch.
      - RSYNC, CRON, and `pushing' content around.
      - MIRROR, CRON, and `pulling' content around.
      - NETSTAT revisited - ten minutes to a 'locked down' host.
      - MD5 and why it's important.
      - IPCHAINS and the 2.2 kernel for masquerading.

Topic B presentation:
Jim Wildman will preview his presentation, for an upcoming HP
computer users national `confab,' "the HPWorld conference."
The subject is "Leveraging Linux for Low Cost Solutions" and
it will detail his firm's installation of the HylaFax software
at the Madison County Hospital, here in central Ohio.

- - We've seen the `rough draft' of the presentation, which was
sent to the Conference sponsors at the start of June, and it
really shines. Be sure not to miss this one!

Topic C presentation:
Tim Koruna will present on Linux Evangelism. The presentation
will include:

- - Techniques for evangelizing non-Linux users
- - How to present Linux to your boss/client so that they a) decide on
Linux and b) think it was their idea to begin with
- - Stupid Salesman Tricks (that might just help you close a few Linux
deals without sacrificing your dignity)
- - The 10 things a new user (boss/client/whomever) must believe before
switching operating systems
- - Linuxmanship (crassly stolen from the web site of the same name, for
your learning pleasure)
- - Resources (I'll pull together some online docs for you to
review at your leisure, rather than talk about resources)

Topic D presentation:
Mark Nielsen from The Computer Underground has been quite busy,
with his exciting Beowulf project for a couple of clients.
We'll try to drag him up to the podium for some remarks.

- - What with the local interest in 'Beowulf' boxen at the Ohio State
Math Department, and the Columbus Police Department, users are
invited to summarize thoughts on Don Becker's initial `distribution,'
and discuss some of the issues on `the latest' and `leading edge,'
balanced against 'uptime' and stability.

Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the presentations.

As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
presentations are subject to change. At deadline, some of the
presenters could not be contacted for confirmation.

Subject: Ganymede 0.99.2 - network directory management system
Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 09:24:28 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Ganymede 0.99.2 is now available for download at

 http://www.arlut.utexas.edu/gash2/

or

 ftp://ftp.arlut.utexas.edu/pub/ganymede/

Ganymede is a GPL'ed network directory management system written in
Java, providing support for team management of NIS, DNS, etc.

- --

This is a bug-fix and documentation release. The biggest bug fixed is
that the admin console will now work properly from the Java plug-in on
Windows. A number of bugs were fixed in the permissions and security
system in the server as well, and one logging improvement.

In the documentation arena, dozens of classes in the Ganymede server
have had javadocs written and/or expanded. Most of the key classes in
the Ganymede server now have mini-essays in the javadocs header,
describing the use of the class, as well as hyperlinks to the main
classes that interact with the class. It should be possible to learn
a lot about how the server works by going to the 'server javadocs'
link in the Ganymede documentation and following links around.

See http://www.arlut.utexas.edu/gash2/CHANGES for a detailed list
of changes in this release.

This is a strong invitation to support the efforts of EuroLinux
(http://www.eurolinux.org). EuroLinux is a partnership between FFII
(http://www.ffii.org) and AFUL (http://www.aful.org), working together against
European Union's shortly upcoming efforts to make software patentable like in
the U.S. and Japan. Software patents would become a serious danger for the Open
Source Movement, especially for the many existing (and upcoming)
independent small European software companies which depend on Open Source
products (like Linux) and offer customer support for it.

Please read http://www.eurolinux.org, http://www.ffii.org/indexen.html,
http://www.ffii.org/news/j1w22en.html and sign
http://swpat.ffii.org/miert/indexen.html if you would like to support the
EuroLinux campaign.

Currently about 1300 persons have signed.
