Are you running top as a normal user, or as root?  Some Unices only let top
display the processes belonging to the user who is running top.  Try running
it as root to see if you get a difference.

Try "ps fax" - might give you everything.  (Sorry, can't test this as I'm
currently chained to a M$ Windoze box...)

If ps can't list it, how do you know it's running? :)  You are starting the
process in one xterm, and you can see it in the "ps" list from a different
xterm.  When you close down the original xterm, you can't see it in "ps" any
more.  It's possible that closing down the original xterm is killing the
process.  Try doing "nohup wget *** & " (or whatever) to see if the solves
it.
