i just did this very thing, downloading the 54M beast in smaller chunks
over the course of two days. i used ncft in the following little script
to suck it over, continuing where it left off each time.

  #!/bin/bash
  cp so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz.save
  ncftp -r -d 1 -C  narnia.mit.edu:/pub/Office40/01/so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz

the -r tells ncftp to retry if the site is busy, the -d 1 tells it to
delay 1 sec each try, and the -C tells it to continue (aka 'reget' in
a normal ftp client). i cp'd the file as a paranoia measure - i'd hate
some glitch to nuke my download.

i called the script 'getit', so i could just type 'getit' to start the
transfer. when i wanted to kill it, i just did a ^\ to nuke the job,
then typed 'getit' again to restart the job.

good luck!
