Try "leafnode".
It is a small news server, and with it you can download over a PPP
link messages from any number of newsgroups, spool and read them
offline, and post messages (which get posted when back online). With
the local spool you can set expirary times so that your local cache
doesn't get too large.
Works great, very convenient for ppp use (heh, as long as you don't
subscribe to too many groups or high volume ones:)
Once locally spooled, you can use your favourite news reader to
read/reply to them. They should all work (once configured correctly).
There was an announcement in comp.os.linux.announce only recently
about an updated version:
ftp://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/pub/leafnode-1.8.tar.gz
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/news/transport/leafnode-1.8.tar.gz
Cheers
