Well, it's not just rpm. With the alien package (<plug> which, of course,
is packaged as part of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution </plug>:-), one can
convert to/from Red Hat *.rpm, Debian *.deb, Stampede *.slp, and tgz formats.
I agree with your main point though. If one likes a distribution, go with
it. IMHO if the distribution adheres to the evolving Linux Standard Base it
doesn't really matter...
