I don't know what program and commands you were using to try to connect - send
that in if you still can't get it to work.

I had this problem, it was the commands to log into the server which were
screwing it up. I believe ISPs often have customised connection managers which
do the job in windows. You should be able to find out how to do it by trying to
connect using minicom.

Read:
- The ISP Hookup howto
- The PPP howto (assuming you are going to use PPP
- Any good general book on Linux

You will also need to know from the ISP the address of their DNS server/s.
